First distinguish rotation from travel

A camera can rotate from a fixed position, physically move through space or change its field of view by zooming. These actions can look superficially similar, but they affect the image differently.

Physical movement changes the camera's relationship to nearby and distant objects. A zoom changes the field of view without changing the camera position. This is why moving towards a product does not look identical to zooming in on it. Choose based on the experience you want the audience to have, then select the equipment.

Pan and tilt

A pan rotates the camera horizontally from its position. Use it to follow a subject across a room or reveal something beyond the opening frame. Establish a clear starting composition and a clear destination. A pan that arrives at nothing often feels unmotivated.

A tilt rotates the camera vertically. It can move from a person's hands to their face, or reveal the height of an object. Tilting changes the viewing angle, while raising the whole camera changes its position. These are different decisions.

A whip pan is a very fast pan that creates motion blur. It can connect energetic moments, but it should fit the visual language of the film. Speed alone does not make a transition meaningful.

Dolly, truck and pedestal

A dolly move commonly travels towards or away from the subject. Moving in can draw attention to a detail or increase a sense of intimacy. Moving away can reveal surrounding context. The movement may use a wheeled dolly, a slider or another suitable support; name the desired move separately from the equipment.

A truck moves laterally, usually left or right relative to the subject. It can follow a person or reveal layers of foreground and background. Watch for objects crossing the frame in distracting ways.

A pedestal raises or lowers the camera while keeping its orientation broadly consistent. It can change viewpoint without the rotation of a tilt. In practice, operators may combine movements, so describe both the path and the framing you need.

Tracking, arcs and vertical reveals

A tracking shot follows a subject through space. Terminology varies between crews, and tracking can be used broadly for moving shots. A shot list should therefore describe the physical action: “Follow the maker from the workbench to the shelf, maintaining a medium view.”

An arc travels around a subject. It reveals changing relationships between foreground, subject and background. A crane or jib allows elevated and descending paths; safe operation and the available space determine what is practical.

Handheld movement can feel immediate or observational. A stabilised move can feel smoother. Neither carries one fixed emotional meaning. Performance, speed, lens choice and context all contribute to the result.

Zooms, focus changes and combinations

A zoom adjusts focal length to change the framing from a fixed position. It may be slow and subtle or rapid and conspicuous. A focus pull shifts the plane of sharp focus, redirecting attention between subjects. It is not a camera move, even though it changes how we read the image.

A dolly zoom combines physical travel with an opposing zoom to keep the main subject roughly similar in size while the background relationship changes. It is a distinctive effect, so it needs a stronger reason than a routine product reveal.

A practical movement brief

For each shot, record the starting frame, ending frame, reason for moving, subject path and required duration. Rehearse at a comfortable speed and allow clean frames before and after the move so the editor has choices.

Check clearance, cables and other people before operating moving equipment. If the location makes a planned move unsafe or impractical, a well-composed static shot may tell the story better. Good movement helps the viewer discover something. It should make the content clearer or more expressive, not simply show that the camera can move.
